Henry's first MLS goal helps N.Y. beat San Jose

08/28/2010 - Harrison, NJ (Sportsbook Betting Lines) - Thierry Henry scored his first goal in Major League Soccer and Dane Richards had a goal and an assist, leading Red Bull New York to a 2-0 win over the San Jose Earthquakes on Saturday at Red Bull Arena.

Richards scored the opener in first-half stoppage time, then assisted as Henry scored his first goal since joining New York in July. Henry had two assists in his MLS debut on July 31, but failed to score in his first five matches.

After missing a few chances throughout the game, including hitting the post in the first half, Henry finally ended his scoring drought when he settled a pass from Richards and fired into the right side of the net from eight yards out.

New York (11-7-4) improved to 3-1-2 since Henry joined the club, and closed to within four points of Columbus for first place in Eastern Conference. The Crew tied FC Dallas, 0-0, on Saturday.

San Jose (8-7-5), which shut out the Los Angeles Galaxy 1-0 last week, had its two-game winning streak snapped.

San Jose had a chance to take control of the match early when top scorer Chris Wondolowski ran onto a rebound, but N.Y. goalie Bouna Coundoul pushed the 12- yard shot off target.

Henry had a similar chance in the 12th when a rebound fell to him in the area, but San Jose defender Tim Ward cleared the 10-yard shot off the line.

Henry turned provider a few minutes later when he put Juan Pablo Angel through on the left side of the area, but the Red Bulls' leading scorer failed to find the net from a tight angle as S.J. goalie Jon Busch made the stop.

Angel returned the favor in the 21st, holding the ball on the left side of the area before finding Henry at the top of the area. Henry curled his shot around Busch, but it hit the right post as he again failed to net his first MLS goal.

Cornell Glen had San Jose's only other good first-half chance in the 25th off a pass from Wondolowski, but fired wide right off an open look from the left.

Marquez forced a save from Busch from the corner of the area late in the half, but New York got the opener minutes later in stoppage time from Richards.

Joel Lindpere played the ball down just outside the area to Richards, who took the ball through traffic, got a lucky deflection off San Jose's Bobby Burling, cut around Busch and rolled the ball into an empty net.

Henry just missed his first goal minutes into the second half when he flicked a ball on target with his back to the goal, but Busch dove to knock the chance down. Angel should have converted the rebound, but somehow hit the right post from just a few yards with the net open.

Henry created a scoring chance for himself four minutes later in the 53rd, as he lifted the ball off the ground to set up a turning shot that Busch touched over the bar.

Marquez unleashed a blast that bounced just wide of the left post as New York continued to pile on the pressure, but San Jose responded with two quick shots that could have easily tied the match.

Arturo Alvarez fired just over the bar in the 60th, and Glen missed wide left seconds later.

New York finally found its second goal a few minutes later, as Henry settled a cross from Richards and hammered in his first MLS goal. Richards hit a one-hop cross from the right that Henry settled near the penalty spot, then fired low past Busch to leave the Earthquakes goalie no chance.

Glen just missed trimming the deficit in half in the 66th, as he lifted a shot over the bar from close range. San Jose failed to put New York under pressure over the final 25 minutes, as Coundoul finished with two saves for his eighth shutout.

New York visits Real Salt Lake on Sept. 4 for its next MLS match, and San Jose visits the Houston Dynamo on Sept. 5.

Problem with Bears?

Chicago, IL - New Chicago Bears quarterback Jay Cutler and star linebacker Brian Urlacher shot down reports of a rift, saying they're simply not true.

"There's nothing between us," Cutler said Thursday, when he reported to training camp. "I just want to put that to rest. There never has been anything between us."

Urlacher added: "I never said what I was quoted as saying and that's it. I have a lot of respect for Jay. I think Jay knows that."
Former Bears receiver Bobby Wade caused a stir when he told Minneapolis radio station KFAN-AM that Urlacher used a profanity while questioning Cutler's manhood during a conversation in Las Vegas last weekend. Wade, who now plays for the Vikings, said Urlacher used a profane version of the word "wimp" during the interview that had to be edited out.

"I wouldn't go face-to-face with Brian, anyway," Cutler said. "No, that's never happened. I've hung out with Brian away from the facility numerous times and we've always gotten along."
Urlacher, noting he was limited by a groin injury, denied the reports in an interview with the Chicago Tribune and did it again when he reported to camp.
"I didn't practice this summer, so I don't know how I would fight the guy if I didn't practice," Urlacher said. "We have no problems. I'm excited about football starting. I'm excited to have him as our quarterback."
Why would Wade say that?
"I don't know," Urlacher said. "Maybe he's jealous because we have a good quarterback now."
Cutler said the first he heard of any friction was when he got a call from Urlacher to clear the air. Urlacher, however, said he had already taken several calls from teammates wondering if the reports were true when Cutler phoned.
"He called me and I said, What's up (expletive), what are you doing?'" a grinning Urlacher said, uttering the same word he allegedly used with Wade. "It's so dumb to me that this even got to this point, but it did and then here we are."

"There's no issue with Jay and Brian, except Brian and Jay are both excited about being teammates for our club this year," coach Lovie Smith said. "No more than that. We can't spend a whole lot of time on something that isn't true. I have talked to the players. Whenever something comes out, you have to address it, but it's a non-issue."
In some ways, Cutler is getting a second chance in Chicago, an opportunity to repair his reputation.
Smith said another quarterback - Michael Vick - deserves one, although he doesn't see it happening with the Bears, who lack an experienced backup. The former Atlanta Falcons star, who served a 23-month sentence for running a dogfighting ring, said Thursday he is getting close to signing with a pro football team.
"A second chance, like everyone in society who has paid their debt to society," Smith said. "He deserves a second chance. As far as we're concerned, we like this team that we have right now."
Particularly the new quarterback.
"Me and Brian have been on a good relationship since I've been here, and I expect it to continue that way," Cutler said.

In part two of MySportsbook.com’s draft preview, we’ll take a look at a division that was extremely disappointing last season: the NFC South.  Many “experts” predicted the Panthers to represent the NFC in the Super Bowl, of course they could not even make the playoffs in an extremely weak NFC.  The Saints definitely made up for the disappointing seasons of their NFC South brethren by exploding out of no where en route to the NFC Championship game.  For the avid NFL gambler, it is imperative to pay attention to the NFL draft.  Although free agency gets a ton of publicity, the successful franchises build their teams around the draft.

1. New Orleans Saints
Who would have thought this time last year that the Saints would be the favorites to win the NFC South for the 2007 campaign?  New Orleans is loaded with firepower on the offensive side of the ball but with the exodus of Joe Horn they will most likely look to draft a WR on Day 1.  Despite having the NFL’s 3rd ranked pass defense last season, the Saints will most likely upgrade their CB’s with one of their first two picks. Other possibilities for the Saints will be TE and DT.  Because of where they will be selecting (27th), the Saints could go the “best available player” route which could net a LB.

2. Carolina Panthers
Carolina was one of the biggest disappointments in the NFL last season.  With the signing of David Carr, expect the very first quarterback controversy to come out of Carolina if Jake Delhomme doesn’t rebound quickly from an average 2007 season. With veteran safety Mike Minter getting up there in age, they will look to draft a safety on Day 1 but probably not in the first round.  LB is another need with the loss of Chris Draft to go along with Dan Morgan’s concussion problems.  If TE Greg Olsen is still on the board, he might be too good to pass up despite their needs on the defensive side of the ball.

3. Atlanta Falcons
The Falcons were another NFC South team to have a disappointing 2007 season.  The Falcons have been plenty busy during the off season with plenty of players coming and going including a new head coach.  The Falcons were able to improve their draft position with the trade of coveted backup QB Matt Schaub.  High on the list of Day 1 needs will be a defensive end to replace Patrick Kerney and a hard hitting safety since Lawyer Milloy is nearing the end of his career.  With an additional 2nd round pick, the Falcons could attempt to trade up to acquire local product WR Calvin Johnson.

4. Tampa Bay Buccaneers
Age really caught up to the Bucs last season.  The Bucs still have plenty of household names on defense in Ronde Barber, Simeon Rice and Derrick Brooks but the one thing those three have in common is unfortunately age.  It is imperative for the Bucs to get much younger, especially on the defensive side of the ball. Despite having bigger needs on the defensive side of the ball, WR Calvin Johnson is the most likely pick if he is still available when the Bucs pick at the four spot.  This would suit Bucs’ faithful just fine as Johnson is widely considered the top talent in the draft and it is a position of need for the Bucs.
